Safety is paramount when it comes to using a forklift. No exceptions. In terms of maintenance, it might be tempting to push it back until it’s absolutely necessary, but it’s never worth the risk it poses to you and your crew. Besides, a proper maintenance plan pays for itself: you’ll often spot issues before they turn into costly repairs down the track.

Daily inspections and log book records are a key component of any maintenance plan. They ensure you stay vigilant with safety procedures and notice any potential problems as quickly as possible. The log book itself serves two functions: firstly, it gives you a physical checklist to ensure nothing is missed during your inspection. Secondly, it serves as an accurate record that you can check in the event of any breakdown or malfunction, or if you sell the forklift second hand.

The essentials of a pre-operational inspection

• Tyres—check for damage or wear, and pressure if applicable.
• Fluids—check hydraulics, fuel, oil, battery, brake fluid and coolant.
• Warning devices—check horns, lights, reversing beeper and flashing light.
• Capacity—check that the load capacity data plate is fitted and legible.
• Mast—check for any damage or wear to the lift guides and chains.
• Hydraulic cylinders and hoses—check for any leaks.
• Fork arms (Tines)—check for damage, cracks and general wear.
• Seating—check the condition and adjustment.
• Seatbelt—make sure it is working properly.
• Controls—check that all pedals and controls operate correctly.
• Guarding—check that all guards are in place.
• Brakes—check that all (including parking brake) operate correctly.

Maintenance and record-keeping

It’s important that you keep a schedule of all maintenance, servicing, cleanings and inspections, and any issues that arise from a check must be recorded in detail. Remember to adjust this process as necessary when any new attachments or components are added.

When any maintenance or repairs are required, ensure that only a qualified professional carries out the work. For example, only a licensed gas fitter can repair or replace parts on an LPG-powered forklift. When a forklift is unsafe for operation, ensure a plan is in place for your staff to follow.

Even if no major maintenance is required, most manufacturers typically recommend a periodic service every 6 months or 250 hours of operation.
